Finding Peace When You're Anxious

“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” — Philippians 4:6–7

When the Worry Won’t Stop

If your mind won’t slow down — replaying every conversation, bracing for the worst, lying awake at night even when you are exhausted — you already know how heavy anxiety is to carry. Maybe it tightens your chest in the middle of an ordinary day, or wakes you at three in the morning, or just sits on you for no reason you can name. You are not weak, and you are not alone. Right here in Warren, more people than you would ever guess are carrying the very same weight in silence.

Some Things That Really Do Help

There are honest, practical things that can quiet the storm, and they are worth doing:

  • Slow your breathing — in for four counts, hold, out for four. It tells your body it is safe.
  • Get the fear out of your head and onto paper. Named on a page, it is almost always smaller than it felt.
  • Don’t carry it alone. Tell one trusted person what you are actually feeling.
  • Put the phone down at night. The late scroll feeds the worry.
  • Care for your body — sleep, a walk, real food. The soul and the body are neighbors.

A Peace That Isn’t a Technique

But you may have already noticed something: the calm never quite lasts. The exercises quiet the surface for a little while, but they don’t reach the thing underneath. There is a peace that doesn’t rise and fall with your circumstances — because it doesn’t come from inside you at all. It is “the peace of God, which passeth all understanding,” and it comes from being made right with the God who made you.

Jesus said, “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). The reason you can cast all your care upon Him is that “he careth for you” (1 Peter 5:7) — and He proved it by carrying our deepest fear, separation from God, all the way to the cross, so that we would never have to. That is the good news at the center of everything we believe. If you have never heard it laid out plainly, take five minutes and read the gospel here.

You Don’t Have to Carry This Alone
